About the workshop:

This is the screen recording of the workshop, cleaned up for easier watching. I’ve removed longer pauses, improved the audio and video a bit, added subtitles, and split it into chapters so you can revisit key sections and navigate easily through this 3h 20min workshop.

In this replay of my workshop I will show you how you can create letters using a broad edge or flat brush. This technique is great especially for beginners, because it provides a solid foundation for learning brush control and understanding how letters are constructed. While you can use various tools for this method, I will focus on the foam brush to demonstrate the steps. The foam brush is a great choice because it is affordable and easy to find.

Watch a comprehensive presentation and hands-on demo where I’ll walk you through these concepts step by step.

Included:

You’ll get the digital copy of my 50-page comic-inspired Big Fat Letters (VOL1) Workbook, filled with detailed info and clear breakdowns to guide you along the way. It also comes with worksheets and Procreate Brushes.
(Please note: if you already have the workbook you can use the code at the end of the book to get a discount on this workshop!)

What you will learn:

You will learn to control the brush, use different types of strokes to build letters, experiment with those techniques, and create dense compositions. This technique teaches you a lot about the basics of brush control and letter constructions.

Workshop Content:

In this first chapter, you’ll get an introduction to the modular lettering technique: where it comes from, how I developed it, and how I use it today. You’ll also discover the essential materials you can use with this technique.

This chapter covers the two fundamental strokes: Straight and curved strokes, which form the foundation of the technique. You also learn about the right posture, how you hold the brush and brush control.

In the third chapter, we finally start writing letters. Beginning with uppercase forms and their variations, then moving on to lowercase letters and a few special variations.

In this chapter, you’ll learn how to modify letters so you can adapt them to your own style and needs.

As a short excursion, we explore how to write serif letters with foam brushes and how to work with contrast while building up letterforms.

In this sixth chapter, we put everything into practice by creating a complete lettering composition. I’ll guide you through my process and explain each step along the way.

To demonstrate the possibilities of this technique, we’ll create what I call a ‘crowded composition.’ Using a longer phrase, we’ll explore how to make it fit on the page by taking advantage of the technique’s flexibility and modifying letters as needed.

In this last chapter, we’ll look at a few alternative tools beyond foam brushes that you can use with this technique.

What tools you need:

Brush:
  • (My choice) A broad foam brush (Any size. I recommend a 2.5cm one)
  • Or any broad nib or flat brush

Ink dish:

To load the brush with ink, you’ll need a surface with enough space. This can be for example:

  • (My choice) A metal pencil case
  • A plastic palette
  • A glass
  • A marmalade lid
  • A pipette

Ink:
  • (My choice) Watercolor (e.g. liquid watercolor by Ecoline)
  • Writing Ink / Drawing Ink
  • Gouache
  • Acrylic paint (diluted)

Paper:
  • (My choice) Watercolor paper (hot pressed)
  • For practice, I use any smooth paper I can find.
  • Literally any paper—depends on the medium you're working with.
  • I prefer A3 with the foam brushes, but you can also work smaller
